Its first public performance was in Vienna in 1828. It is nicknamed the "Little C major" to distinguish it from his later Ninth Symphony, also in C major, which is known as "the Great." I'm sure it wasn't the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It was a communal meal worship service modeled after the one invented by Cranmer for the English during the Protestant Reformation. Luther hated any liturgy that smacked of sacrifice. We had to do away with sacrifice.
