There are so few African-American bishops because of “racism,” Washington Auxiliary Bishop Robert Boxie said in a September 7 interview with Catholic News Service. He was appointed by Pope Leo XIV on May 1. The numbers: Of 268 active U.S. bishops, five (2%) are Black. Black Americans make up 2% of U.S. Catholics and, over the past 20 years, about 2% of U.S. priestly ordinations.
Why are there so few Black bishops in America? “The short answer is racism.” America’s youngest bishop, Robert Boxie, Auxiliary of Washington.

Leo XIV has accepted the early resignation of Bishop Guido Gallese, 64, of Alessandria, Northern Italy, today. Bishop Luigi Testore of neighboring Acqui is the new apostolic administrator. Monsignor Gallese was appointed as Ecclesiastical Assistant to the National Association of Shrines by the Dicastery for Evangelisation. Gallese’s resignation comes eight months after an apostolic visitation by Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello. No report from Bertello’s visitation was published. ANSA reported that complaints about Bishop Gallese had accumulated in Rome over several years and that the visitation examined diocesan administration and finances, including major property projects. The visitation generated overstated headlines over Gallese’s lifestyle: his Tesla, motorcycle, kitesurfing and residence were repeatedly cited in Italian media. However, the deeper conflict appears to have involved Gallese’s governance. Local media described strong opposition from the clergy, particularly over parish …Ve
Emma Bonino has died at 78. For decades, she was one of Italy’s most prominent Radical politicians. She was a leading campaigner for abortion, euthanasia, drug legalization, and more secular causes. Although she was not a medical professional, Bonino, according to her own testimony, performed over 10,000 illegal abortions. She is one of the most sinister figures in the history of Italy. Bonino nevertheless praised Francis, who maintained a warm personal relationship with her and personally visited her in 2024, bringing her flowers and chocolates.
The Next Terrorist Attack Is Predictable nytimes.com/…09/10/opinion/911-ai-terrorist-attac… Sept. 10, 2026 By Philip Bobbitt Mr. Bobbitt is a legal scholar and was the senior director for strategic planning at the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton On Sept. 11, 2001, I was in an airplane at Kennedy International Airport bound for Europe, scheduled to leave at 8:30 a.m. For some reason, we were removed from the rotation and sat on the tarmac as other planes took off. As I glanced over the shoulder of my seatmate, I saw a dark gray wafer-shaped explosion, two or three floors thick, violently thrust forward from one of the World Trade Center’s two towers. Some minutes later, as I watched intently, a huge golden sunburst erupted from the second tower. I knew what had happened. Sept. 11 was not only predictable; it had been predicted. When I drafted my final memo to the president’s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, at the end of the summer of 1999, I wrote, among …Ve
The priest behind the infamous “Eucharist at sea” has been appointed head of University Pastoral Ministry for the Archdiocese of Milan for the next five years. In July 2022, Don Mattia Bernasconi celebrated a Novus Ordo Mass waist-deep in the sea off Crotone, using an inflatable mattress as an “altar.” Since September 1, he has overseen the Archdiocese’s pastoral work with university students, while continuing as chaplain at Humanitas University, a position he has held since 2023.
Westminster Archbishop: Pastoral Need for Roman Rite, Pastoral Silence for “Catholic” Prime Minister Leo XIV-appointed Archbishop Richard Moth of Westminster, England, approaches 'Traditionis Custodes' from what he describes as a pastoral perspective, “Where there is pastoral need, then I would make the argument for it,” he told NcRegister.com on September 10. In his previous Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, he said he “responded to that pastoral need.” Archbishop Moth believes that we need a greater sense of the transcendent in the liturgy, but believes this is “perfectly possible” using the Novus Ordo. Asked about an expected meeting with Catholic Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who is supports abortion and homosexual "marriage", Archbishop Moth replied evasively: “A conversation I would have with somebody about their conscience is between me and that individual,” he said. “If particular issues are raised, I would speak about them and address them, yes.” Moth also calls it “very positive …Ve
A historic former monastery in Germany is being converted into rental apartments. The Diocese of Osnabrück has sold the Kommende Lage in Rieste, Lower Saxony, because it could no longer afford the renovations needed for the centuries-old building. Kommende Lage is a former monastery complex dating to the 13th century. The buyer, who runs a tree nursery in nearby Bersenbrück, takes ownership January 15 and plans to renovate it for housing. The purchase price was not disclosed. The site’s nearly 800-year-old Catholic pilgrimage tradition will continue: the pilgrimage church and rectory were not sold, and a priest will remain to oversee the pilgrimage.

Emma Bonino has died aged 78. May God have mercy on her soul. She was one of the most consequential figures in modern Italian politics, and Catholics should be honest about what that legacy means. She devoted much of her public life to causes fundamentally opposed to Catholic moral teaching, most notably the legalisation and promotion of abortion. She became a principal architect of Italy’s transformation from an overwhelmingly Catholic culture into a far more secular one. That makes Pope Francis’s repeated warmth towards her, including his extraordinary description of Bonino as one of Italy’s “forgotten greats”, all the more difficult to understand.
A 900-Year-Old French Abbey Is Up for Sale for Just €2 Million An abbey with almost 900 years of history is up for sale in France for around two million euros. Notre-Dame de Langonnet in Brittany was founded in 1136. The estate includes around 5,380 square meters of buildings, set within nearly 58 hectares of woodland, meadows and agricultural land. For centuries, Cistercian monks prayed here and shaped the area around the monastery. After the horrors of the French Revolution, the Spiritans - the congregation whose later superior general was Monsignor Marcel Lefebvre - made Langonnet their home in the 19th century. They remained for nearly 170 years. Generations of missionaries passed through the abbey before leaving for Africa and other parts of the world. Now that chapter is coming to an end. The last Spiritans are leaving, including elderly members of the order who had spent their retirement at Langonnet. The property has reportedly been looking for a buyer for around two years, while …Ve

Bishop Schneider: Document Against Co-Redemptrix Will One Day Be Cancelled Synodality is a “very cunning code word to undermine Catholic doctrine”, Bishop Athanasius Schneider told AdVaticanum on September 10. He believes the vagueness of the word is deliberate, a means of gradually adapting Catholic doctrine, morality and ecclesial structures to Protestantism and contemporary attitudes toward sexuality. Monsignor Schneider calls synodality the height of the modernist movement, leading toward relativism. He adds that this openness has one notable exception: the traditional Latin Mass. “This document will be cancelled” Responding to the document Mater Populi Fidelis against the Marian titles Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of All Graces, Bishop Schneider argues that the Church cannot cancel language found in missals and used by popes, saints and Doctors of the Church. He believes the document, not the titles, will eventually disappear: “I think, in the future, this document will be cancelled.” …Ve
