As an altar boy, prior to Vatican II, I can attest to the reverence with which the celebrant prepared for mass at that time. It was both inspiring and humbling to watch the priest carefully say the prayers required as each vestment was adorned. I was a server long enough to watch such preparation dissipate and disappear post (mis?) implementation of Vatican II. I am not certain whether certain rubrics were still in place but ignored, but they certainly were not followed from what I could determine. It appears to me that we suffer from an atrophied 'ars celebrandi' as a result.
